CONVENTION ON PEOPLES UNITY & COMMUNAL HARMONY AT SALEM: News from Com R DHARMALINGAM


In connection with the 60th anniversary of AIIEA and also as per the decision of the South Zone Conference, Insurance Corporation Employees Union, Salem Division conducted a Convention on ' Peoples' unity - communal Harmony' at Sunil Maitra Ninaivagam on 4.10.2010 at 5.30 pm to mark the occasion of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Com R. Anand, Vice President,ICEU, Salem presided over the Convention. Com R. Narasimhan, Treasurer, ICEU, Salem welcomed the gathering and spoke of the simplicity and honesty that was the essential part of Mahatma Gandhi. Com B Vikraman, District Secretary, CITU, Madurai District, who in his special address spoke on how the religion which was sought initially to give solace from life's problems, later became a weapon to be wielded against other religions. He also spoke on how the English who ruled over India practised the policy of divide and rule to full measure in the matter of religion; and of how the one principle steadfastly followed and upheld by Mahatma Gandhi - 'COMMUNALHARMONY', for which he even had to give his life. He also emphasized the need to integrate and unite people under the Trade Union banner to carry forward the struggle for emancipation of the working class.

The audience of over 160 comrades were held spellbound by Com Vikraman's rhetoric which lasted for over an hour. With vote of thanks being proposed by Com R Anand, the Convention came to a close.
